Massage Therapy Massage Therapy is the assessment and planned treatment of soft tissue (muscles, ligaments, tendons) and the joints of the body. It provides relief and prevention of physical dysfunction and pain. Therapists apply soft tissue manipulation and some joint mobilization techniques to assist the efforts to heal and relieve pain. Massage is beneficial in conditions where muscles have contracted around a painful sight to protect the area. If pain persists, muscles may contract out of habit, which may lead to pressure on nerves, causing tingling, numbness and more pain. Massage acts directly on the muscles and also stimulates the nervous system to instruct muscles to relax even more. Massage can help heal injuries from overuse or trauma by reducing inflammation and increasing circulation. Certain massage techniques can limit scar tissue formation in new injuries and reduce scar tissue around old injuries which maybe restricting joint movement. Massage promotes relaxation and helps you to recognize unconsciously held tension, helping to release the tension before it creates problems. It can also make you aware of tight, restricted areas before they turn into painful conditions. Regular massage helps a person achieve a feeling of well-being and assists in maintaining optimum health. Regular massage maintains muscle elasticity and flexibility in order to prevent future injury.
